Actor Heath Ledger Found Dead

NEW YORK (CNN) — Actor Heath Ledger was found dead Tuesday of a possible drug overdose in a Lower Manhattan apartment, the New York Police Department said.

Heath Ledger was found dead in his Manhattan apartment.

The Academy Award nominated actor was 28.

“Pills were found in the vicinity of the bed,” police spokesman Paul Browne told CNN.

“This is being looked at as a possible overdose, but that is not confirmed yet.”

Ledger was found by a housekeeper who had gone to wake him for an appointment with a masseuse in the Soho apartment, Browne said.

He was declared dead at about 3:30 p.m., Browne said.

In 2005, the actor played Ennis Del Mar in “Brokeback Mountain,” about two cowboys who had a secret relationship.

The role earned him the Oscar nomination.

Ledger was born in Perth, Australia. He has a young daughter with actress Michelle Williams, his co-star in “Brokeback Mountain.”

On a cold November night 36 years ago, in the driving wind and rain, somewhere between southern Washington state and just north of Portland, Oregon, a man calling himself Dan Cooper parachuted out of a plane he’d just hijacked clutching a bag filled with $200,000 in stolen cash.

Who was Cooper? Did he survive the jump? And what happened to the loot, only a small part of which has ever surfaced?

It’s a mystery, frankly. We’ve run down thousands of leads and considered all sorts of scenarios. And amateur sleuths have put forward plenty of their own theories. Yet the case remains unsolved.

Would we still like to get our man? Absolutely. And we have reignited the case—thanks to a Seattle case agent named Larry Carr and new technologies like DNA testing.

You can help. We’re providing here, for the first time, a series of pictures and information on the case. Please look it all over carefully to see if it triggers a memory or if you can provide any useful information.

A few things to keep in mind, according to Special Agent Carr:

* Cooper was no expert skydiver. “We originally thought Cooper was an experienced jumper, perhaps even a paratrooper,” says Special Agent Carr. “We concluded after a few years this was simply not true. No experienced parachutist would have jumped in the pitch-black night, in the rain, with a 200-mile-an-hour wind in his face, wearing loafers and a trench coat. It was simply too risky. He also missed that his reserve chute was only for training and had been sewn shut—something a skilled skydiver would have checked.”
* The hijacker had no help on the ground, either. To have utilized an accomplice, Cooper would’ve needed to coordinate closely with the flight crew so he could jump at just the right moment and hit the right drop zone. But Cooper simply said, “Fly to Mexico,” and he had no idea where he was when he jumped. There was also no visibility of the ground due to cloud cover at 5,000 feet.
* We have a solid physical description of Cooper. “The two flight attendants who spent the most time with him on the plane were interviewed separately the same night in separate cities and gave nearly identical descriptions,” says Carr. “They both said he was about 5’10″ to 6′, 170 to 180 pounds, in his mid-40s, with brown eyes. People on the ground who came into contact with him also gave very similar descriptions.”

And what of some of the names pegged as Cooper? None have panned out. Duane Weber, who claimed to be Cooper on his deathbed, was ruled out by DNA testing (we lifted a DNA sample from Cooper’s tie in 2001). Kenneth Christiansen, named in a recent magazine article, didn’t match the physical description and was a skilled paratrooper. Richard McCoy, who died in 1974, also didn’t match the description and was at home the day after the hijacking having Thanksgiving dinner with his family in Utah, an unlikely scenario unless he had help.

One of the parachutes left behind by Cooper and the canvas bag it came in. Cooper asked for four chutes in all; he jumped with two (including one that was used for instruction and had been sewn shut). He used the cord from one of the remaining parachutes to tie the stolen money bag shut.

As many agents before him, Carr thinks it highly unlikely that Cooper survived the jump. “Diving into the wilderness without a plan, without the right equipment, in such terrible conditions, he probably never even got his chute open.”

Still, we’d all like to know for sure, and Carr thinks you can help.

“Maybe a hydrologist can use the latest technology to trace the $5,800 in ransom money found in 1980 to where Cooper landed upstream. Or maybe someone just remembers that odd uncle.”

Burger King’s signature sandwich, the Whopper, turns 50 this year, as illustrated by a timeline that points out how little it’s evolved in 50 years. Hell, some of those original Whoppers might still be in circulation today.

This is a happy occasion for Burger King, because a wax facsimile of its “flame-broiled piece of perfection” will be added to the Madame Tussauds collection today.
Details on how the wax copy differs in taste or texture from the original were not available at press time.

Previous high points for the Whopper include Ellen DeGeneres’s consumption of one on stage back when she did stand-up (thereby making the Whopper America’s gayest sandwich).

Also, more Whoppers are eaten on New Year’s Eve than any other day (because you’re already drunk, so why not?).

UGH, I am a Leftie and I am sooooo upset I missed this day.
Left-handers go through a lot, such as:
-writing with your left hand, you get INK smudges a lot
-can openers, scissors…growing up my mom had to teach me how to use correctly
-KITCHEN KNIVES!
-in High School music class, I wanted to play the Ukulele, but my teacher, and I quote “I don’t have the time to teach a left hander”, made me learn to play….wait for it….RECORDER!

August 13th of each year is International Lefthanders’ Day.
It was begun in 1976 by the fellow who started Lefthanders’ International.

A study suggested that approximately 8 to 15% of the adult population was left-handed.

Chris McManus of University College London, argues that the proportion of left-handers is rising and left-handed people as a group have historically produced an above-average quota of high achievers. He says that left-handers’ brains are structured differently in a way that widens their range of abilities, and the genes that determine left-handedness also govern development of the language centers of the brain.

Studies indicate that left-handedness is more common in males than females.

A left-handed individual may be known as a southpaw.

Universal Studios offers one fan a very McFly gift!

In conjunction with the upcoming closure of the “Back to the Future,” the studio has announced it is giving away one of the stainless steel 1981 DeLoreans that served as inspiration for Doc Brown’s flux capacitor-equipped time machines.

Christopher Lloyd, who starred in the “Back to the Future” films alongside Michael J. Fox, zoomed over to Universal Studios Hollywood earlier this month to announce the contest as the “Back to the Future – The Ride” plans to close its doors on Labor Day.

DeLorean to bring back car

The DeLorean, which was the famous gull winged car that featured in the Back to the Future movies, might get a second life. The DeLorean Motor Company is said to be making plans to bring the car back, and will only produce a limited number.

The DeLorean ended production back in 1982 in Northern Ireland, so although the car has not been in production for 25 years it still has a huge following. Over 9,000 of the vehicles were built, and out of that there are still 6,500 which are still on the road today.

Although the car did not sell enough to keep the company afloat, the DeLorean still lives on as it has cult status due to the car appearing in all three Back to the Future movies.

Karen Allen is to reprise her role of Marion Ravenwood from RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, for the in-production fourth INDIANA JONES movie.

Shia Labeouf, Cate Blanchett and Ray Winstone also star alongside Harrison Ford in the new movie.

Indiana Jones’s past love interests will feature in the new film. That would include Kate Capshaw from TEMPLE OF DOOM.

At least 337 dead in Peru quake PERU
A major earthquake with a magnitude of 7.9 struck off the coast of central Peru Wednesday evening, and series of aftershocks rocked the country in the hours that followed.
The death toll from the quake grew quickly overnight with at least 337 dead and more than 1,350 injured, Peru’s Health Ministry reported.

Signs of HOPE HUNTINGTON, Utah
Rescue workers said they detected a noise Wednesday night though it’s unclear what it was deep inside the Utah mine where six men have been trapped for nine days.
“We saw some indication of noise for a period of about five minutes that we had not seen before,” said Richard Stickler, director of the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration. “We’re not sure what it means.”
Bob Murray, president and CEO of mine co-owner Murray Energy Group, told reporters, “Don’t read too much into this noise we picked up.”
“But it is a sign of hope,” he said.

BLACK THURSDAY NEW YORK
The stock market tumbled again Wednesday after the Federal Reserve added more cash to the banking system but failed to quash investors’ jitters about problems in lending.
The market traded nervously, jerking the Dow Jones industrial average above and below the 13,000 mark throughout the day as investors wrestled with reports about potential trouble at Countrywide Financial Corp. and KKR Financial Holdings.
At the close, the Dow was down 167.45 points, or 1.29 percent, to 12,861.47, closing below 13,000 for the first time since April 24.

A young Nicaraguan man who says he fears he will be killed in his home country because of his sexual orientation has gone into hiding in Toronto after his latest bid to stay in Canada failed.

Alvaro Orozco, 22, has been holed up at a friend’s place since Thursday, when his refugee claim was denied, but came out briefly over the weekend to speak to CBC News.

“Most of the time, I’m hiding because I’m not supposed to be anywhere. I feel like a fugitive. It’s really bad,” said Orozco.

His case made headlines in Canada and Nicaragua in February when the Immigration and Refugee Board denied him asylum saying they didn’t believe he was gay.

His lawyer filed a motion to reopen the refugee claim. Again, he was denied.

He based his refugee claim on the fact that it is against the law to be gay in Nicaragua, where an anti-sodomy law was enacted in 1992.
